Artist PortfolioRaymond Saunders has been an important presence in American Contemporary Art for over 50 years. Each piece is a dialogue, similar to the interplay of instruments in freestyle jazz, the musicians relying upon chance and intention, rawness and control. Saunders studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1960, earned a BFA at Carnegie Institute of Technology. In 1961, he received an MFA from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Among Saunders’ many awards, he has received the Prix de Rome, a Guggenheim Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts Award in both 1977 and 1984.
